Delve into the magical world of microcontrollers, tiny computers that drive automation in the world around us. We find them in timers, thermostats, toys, microwaves, electric toothbrushes, automobiles, and the exciting new sensors and actuators that make up the Internet of Things. The Arduino microcontroller and its development environment make it easy for you to put together electronic circuits and program the Arduino itself without having an extensive background in electronics, engineering, or computer programming.

In this maker experience, you will get:

  • An overview of the Arduino and key components
  • An introduction to electronics
  • An introduction to programming the Arduino

The course fee includes an Arduino Super Starter Kit featuring an Arduino UNO board, and myriad components – resistors, capacitors, LEDs, motors, LCD display, joystick, and many sensors (humidity/temperature, photocells, infrared receiver, thermistor, and ultrasonic distance).

We will use your starter kit and the computers in the Mixxer Computer Lab to develop several small projects using some of these sensors. Handouts will include definitions of key terms and concepts, diagrams, code listings, and instructions for installing the Arduino development environment on your own computer. The Starter Kit includes a CD with extensive documentation and additional projects to carry your journey into microcontrollers beyond this introductory workshop.

**SPACE IS LIMITED TO ALLOW FOR MORE ONE-ON-ONE INSTRUCTION.**

**REGISTRATION CLOSES 3 DAYS BEFORE THIS WORKSHOP TO ALLOW TIME TO ORDER ARDUINO SUPER STARTER KITS. SIGN UP SOON!**

INSTRUCTOR BIO: Randy has had an eclectic career that includes a degree in Zoology, a Masters in Speech Communication and over 40 years of software development and management. In 2013, chancing upon a Popular Science magazine article describing the Arduino microcontroller and the maker movement, he saw a new opportunity for creativity. He immediately acquired an Arduino and set off to learn more about it and about electronics in general. Many microcontroller projects later, he is ready to share his knowledge and experience with others.

Randy is an experienced speaker and presenter. His current projects involve the Internet of Things, especially low energy Bluetooth (BLE) communication and employing microcontrollers with his other hobby, 3D design and printing.

Workshops must meet a minimum number of registrations.  Mixxer may cancel workshop 48 hours prior to start time, if minimum is not met. Should you need to cancel your registration, 48 hours notice is required to request a cancellation, refund or credit to future workshop date.
