  Come learn how to forge and craft your own everyday carry knife. Over the course of two days, you'll take a bar of steel and a chunk of wood and walk away with your very own hand made knife! In this class you will learn the basics of forging the knife, sharpening your blade, and crafting the wooden handle.

  Day one will be spent at the forge hammering and shaping your blade. Day two spent in the metal shop sharpening your blade and in the woodshop crafting your handle. 

  Each day will include a 1 hour lunch break (lunch NOT included) and water breaks as needed. 

  Recommended attire: Wear a shirt that is of natural fibers, jeans, and shoes that completely cover feet. All safety gear will be supplied. 

  Recommended to bring: Sunscreen and bottle of water. Don't forget to rest up before the class and bring all your muscle!

  
  

  
  

  Daniel Butner grew up on a tobacco farm building house. He didn't grow up having much except the ability to build and repair things. Daniel started working with wood at a young age, and enjoys pushing the limits of what he can do.

  Daniel encourages open discussion to get others input to get the most out of what you will make. His intention with leading these maker experiences is to guide you on how to use the tools to make the something you always wanted. He is always willing to help and answer questions through your making process.

  Daniel is also a long time member and supporter of the Mixxer community, and has his own day in Winston-Salem!

• Creating a Simple Sewn Notebook: Intro to Bookbinding

  Come learn how to make your own notebooks! During this class, participants will create bookbinding signatures, which are small folded groups of pages that form the foundation of a book, and sew these signatures onto a cover. The class will use both a single signature and three signature designs to create a secure and visually appealing binding. Participants will use needle and thread to create 2-4 notebooks during the class.

  
  

  Jeremy moved to the Triad area two years ago and dived into various artistic endeavors, nurturing their talents and expanding their creative horizons. He has explored multiple creative forms including wood turning, clay forming and metal work. One year ago, he discovered the world of bookbinding, and it has become a true passion ever since. Jeremy is focused specifically on sewn bindings and continues to hone his skills and artistic expression in this craft.

  Join us for this beginners painting class, you'll be going over the tools, techniques and applications for dot painting mandalas!

  During the class you'll be testing out the different techniques on paper before diving into painting on other objects. The stones, paint, and tools will be included. All you need to bring is yourself and your imagination!

  

  I love creating and I found that dot painting is a great way to relax and make cool art! It's one of my favorite things to do! I am also a crocheter, soap maker, and photographer. I enjoy taking walks in nature with my dog, Kiefer. I moved to Winston Salem in 2021 and I'm in love with this city!

  Join us to learn the basics of creating copper wire jewelry with these fun copper rings! In this class you'll learn how to bend and shape the copper wire to perfectly fit your finger for the perfect ring set. Leave with a set of two to four rings!

  Note: Some manual dexterity and hand strength is needed to bend and form the wire. 

  

  
  

  Thaddeus Prevette is a sculpture artist who began working with three dimensional objects back in 2016. He graduated from Western Carolina University in 2020 with a BFA in studio art and graduated from East Carolina University with an MFA in sculpture in May of 2023. He participates in public art exhibitions and was commissioned for the design of the ECU 911 Memorial sculpture back in 2021. He works with recycled and repurposed material to create narrative artwork that is influenced by historic and modern mythologies.

  Have you ever wanted to experience molten glass up-close? Wanted to learn the art of glass working but didn't know where to start? Come learn how to melt, manipulate, sculpt and be mesmerized by the world of glass art. Through demonstration and hands on learning, you will learn how to manipulate glass to create a glass pendant! This class will cover the basics of using a torch to shape your glass and how to create a colorful texture using frit. Come melt some glass with us and maybe find a new passion!
  

  NOTE:  Closed toed shoes are required. Please tie back long hair and avoid loose fitting shirt sleeves. Please be prepared for long periods of standing. Please reach out to workshops@wsmixxer.org for questions about accommodations.  

  
  

  Growing up in the heart of North Carolina, I spent most of my life surrounded by two brothers. When I had initially picked up lampworking was around the same time I lost my eldest brother and grandmother back to back. This medium helped me heal, a distraction. I learned that glass is just as fragile as life. I see myself in the reflections of the glass, in the flame that comes from my torch. Teaching me patience that I never had before. Going on 2 years working with a torch, making this my 6th year in the glass community. My goal is to create a safe haven in this class for those seeking a break from reality while exploring a new passion.

  Craft your own charcuterie board from scratch to finish! You'll learn how to take a Red Grandis board turn it into a perfectly shaped charcuterie board with a leather strap. 

  In this class you'll learn to use different tools like a table saw, router, planer, jointer, craft knife, and drill. You'll leave with a board that you've sanded and applied food safe finish that you can use for all your hosting events to come!
  

  
  

  I am an Industrial Designer by degree and a whole animal butcher/farmer by belief. Colombian, born and raised. Moved to the US about 2 years ago. I love working with wood, ceramics, and leather goods, and the warmth they transmit. They bring life to any space.   Transform an old book into the perfect notebook/sketchbook! During the class students will take an old hardcover book and create a personalized journal for future use. Students will create groupings of blank pages and bind those to the hardcover using a long stitch book binding technique.

Elaine's and is able to bring this workshop to the public for free, through her collaboration with by the Gilead COMPASS InitiativeⓇ Faith Coordinating Center at Wake Forest University’s School of Divinity. She will hold space throughout the workshop for participants to feel safe sharing their thoughts on the stigma of HIV at the intersection of faith and invites participants to come with an open mind and heart to ensure all are welcome.

  Join us to get started with creating videos with just your phone! In this class, you will learn how to tell an engaging story, edit with Capcut, and best practices for using audio. You'll be taken through the process of how to edit and export your video (with provided shots) and create your own beautiful shots to get you started on the next video of your own. By the end of the class, you'll have all the basic skills to be on your video production journey!

  Who am I? Isn't that what you want to know? I'm a passionate storyteller who's just as passionate about my family and my friends. I was born in Levittown, New York but moved to Atlanta in 1973 with my family. In 1982 I attended and then graduated in 1985 from Belmont University. I majored in Recording Engineering and Music Business. After graduating, I interned at Studio One in Doraville, Georgia. It was there that I worked with Johnny Van Zant (lead singer for Lynyrd Skynyrd). In 1993 I sold a business to pursue video and story telling. The only thing was I didn't know what story to tell, so I told other's stories. I shared their lives with their families and friends, and along the way I grew into teaching film and video. Teaching was something I never knew I could do-but I excelled and found my passion. and in 2009, I took everything I learned through the years and began teaching film and video at Alpharetta High School. And over the years, our program piled on the accolades, winning 32 Student Production Awards (Student Emmy Awards) from the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences. I focused on documentaries, teaching students how to uncover a story and dive deep to get the story behind the story! I also helped students learn how to monetize their passion and build a sustainable business. In 2012 I started The Alpharetta Film Academy and began teaching film to students in an Academy style teaching system–that was the beginning of the Winston-Salem Film Academy that I started in 2023. In 2016, I was honored by the Student Television Network as their Teacher of the Year for the entire country! My network had grown nationally as my students got accepted to film schools across the country. And then in 2018, I became an Apple Distinguished Educator. I retired from teaching in Alpharetta, Georgia and relocated with my wife to Winston-Salem in 2022. That same year we started Misner Media and entered and won the Winston-Salem Business Plan Contest. As Misner Media grew, so did my love for giving back to my community. In 2023 I volunteered at the Winston-Salem Street School, teaching entrepreneurship and worked with Alan Shelton at Mixxer to develop a program to teach story-telling and monetization for students in Winston-Salem.

  Hi, I'm Dakota. I went to school for architecture and currently work at a high end furniture design firm running their 3d printers and doing their 3d modeling and rendering. I've worked in a lot of different fields from the building construction industry to city planning. I'm sort of a jack of all trades when it comes to making both with my hands and digitally. My current hobbies are home renovation, cosplay, and building cnc machines. I'm always short on time but I love to brain storm and either get inspired or help inspire others.   Come make a printed patch perfect to customize any piece of clothing! In this class you'll get to learn about the process of using the laser cutter to etch your own wooden stamp before printing it onto fabric. Sew your patches onto jackets, hide the stains on your favorite jeans, or use it to mend worn down clothes! 

  We will have several designs to choose from or you can bring your own design!  If you bring your own design, please ensure that it will fit in a 3x3 inch square, is a black and white image with thick lines, and is either a png, jpg, svg, or dxf file type.  

  Please wear clothes you do not mind getting dirty as you might get ink on yourself.

  Learn how to create a dazzling rainbow effect on wood and create a rainbow tone picture frame! In this class we will review how to create a rainbow finish. This style can be recreated on most hardwoods, but for the purposes of this class we will be working on pre-assembled wooden picture frames. This look uses several techniques: shou sugi ban inspired wood burning, colored stain application, and traditional wood sealing. You’ll be taking home a finished 8” x 6” picture frame that can hold a 4” x 6” photo, as well as the knowledge of how to apply the technique to other objects.

  When using stains, there's always the risk of accidentally getting some on your clothes. Please wear something that you don't mind this happening to. Refrain from wearing loose clothes, and keep long hair tied back.

Bring it in and ask Mixxer's resident expert. Learn basic sewing machine technology and make and take home a template of your machine's stitches and settings. You'll also learn to adjust for different stitches and fabrics. Any sewing project questions?   Come learn the basic techniques and skills you will need to start painting beautiful miniatures! In this class you will learn the building blocks you will need to have to build your skills and style for painting in the 3D medium. You will focus on all the basics of the art form including light and shadow, color theory, brush techniques and control which you will use to practice and build your control. We will be painting a full mini of a 2 inch turtle in your choice of colors. 

  
  

  For the majority of my life I have been heavily interested in crafts, art and hobbies. I have experience in a lot of different styles and mediums within the hobby space. From the time I was a kid I spent a lot of time learning things that interest me, which has given me experience in woodworking, paper-art, fabrication, painting, 3D printing and even comic book creation. Nerd and geek culture has been a big influence on my life and has pushed my interest in hands on and creative hobbies for decades. Not only do I love finding and learning as many hobbies as possible, but I absolutely love to teach. Sharing my knowledge and being able to support and advance peoples skills and talents within their artistic and creative endeavors is something I am very passionate about. Watching students come in with minimal experience and progress to surpass my abilities is something that gives me a lot of pride and happiness. I am looking forward to expanding my knowledge within the hobby space at Mixxer, getting to know the creators and hobbyists, and of course, sharing my knowledge with whoever has an interest in expanding their artistic heights.   Come make a printed patch perfect to customize any piece of clothing! In this class you'll get to learn about the process of using the laser cutter to etch your own wooden stamp before printing it onto fabric. Sew your patches onto jackets, hide the stains on your favorite jeans, or use it to mend worn down clothes! 

  We will have several designs to choose from or you can bring your own design!  If you bring your own design, please ensure that it will fit in a 3x3 inch square, is a black and white image with thick lines, and is either a png, jpg, svg, or dxf file type.  

  Please wear clothes you do not mind getting dirty as you might get ink on yourself.

  Whether you’re gearing up to fight on the battlefield or having a night on the town, chainmail has provided a durable medium for adornment and protection for over a millennia.

  Have you ever wanted to learn to bladesmith or make a knife but unsure a multi-part series is for you? In this class, you will learn the foundations of bladesmithing in a single session and turn a railroad spike into a knife. 

  In this class, you will get a preliminary introduction to bladesmithing and learn:

  • blacksmithing safety
  • forging process 
  • hammering technique
  • how to draw and bend metal
  • grinding and finishing your knife!

  This maker experience will give you the foundations that you can use to make your own knife in future bladesmithing classes!

  IMPORTANT NOTE: Please wear a shirt that is of natural fibers, jeans, and shoes that completely cover feet. Safety gear will be supplied. Bringing sunscreen and a water bottle is also recommended.

  Please note this class will include long periods of hammering and proximity to fire. 

  
  

  Daniel Butner grew up on a tobacco farm building house. He didn't grow up having much except the ability to build and repair things. Daniel started working with wood at a young age, and enjoys pushing the limits of what he can do.

  Daniel encourages open discussion to get others input to get the most out of what you will make. His intention with leading these maker experiences is to guide you on how to use the tools to make the something you always wanted. He is always willing to help and answer questions through your making process.

  Who am I? Isn't that what you want to know? I'm a passionate storyteller who's just as passionate about my family and my friends. I was born in Levittown, New York but moved to Atlanta in 1973 with my family. In 1982 I attended and then graduated in 1985 from Belmont University. I majored in Recording Engineering and Music Business. After graduating, I interned at Studio One in Doraville, Georgia. It was there that I worked with Johnny Van Zant (lead singer for Lynyrd Skynyrd). In 1993 I sold a business to pursue video and story telling. The only thing was I didn't know what story to tell, so I told other's stories. I shared their lives with their families and friends, and along the way I grew into teaching film and video. Teaching was something I never knew I could do-but I excelled and found my passion. and in 2009, I took everything I learned through the years and began teaching film and video at Alpharetta High School. And over the years, our program piled on the accolades, winning 32 Student Production Awards (Student Emmy Awards) from the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences. I focused on documentaries, teaching students how to uncover a story and dive deep to get the story behind the story! I also helped students learn how to monetize their passion and build a sustainable business. In 2012 I started The Alpharetta Film Academy and began teaching film to students in an Academy style teaching system–that was the beginning of the Winston-Salem Film Academy that I started in 2023. In 2016, I was honored by the Student Television Network as their Teacher of the Year for the entire country! My network had grown nationally as my students got accepted to film schools across the country. And then in 2018, I became an Apple Distinguished Educator. I retired from teaching in Alpharetta, Georgia and relocated with my wife to Winston-Salem in 2022. That same year we started Misner Media and entered and won the Winston-Salem Business Plan Contest. As Misner Media grew, so did my love for giving back to my community. In 2023 I volunteered at the Winston-Salem Street School, teaching entrepreneurship and worked with Alan Shelton at Mixxer to develop a program to teach story-telling and monetization for students in Winston-Salem.

  Have you ever wanted to experience molten glass up-close? Wanted to learn the art of glass working but didn't know where to start? Come learn how to melt, manipulate, sculpt and be mesmerized by the world of glass art. Through demonstration and hands on learning, you will learn how to manipulate glass to create a glass marble and a pendant! This class will cover the basics of using a torch to shape your glass and how to create a colorful texture using frit. Come melt some glass with us and maybe find a new passion!

  Growing up in the heart of North Carolina, I spent most of my life surrounded by two brothers. When I had initially picked up lampworking was around the same time I lost my eldest brother and grandmother back to back. This medium helped me heal, a distraction. I learned that glass is just as fragile as life. I see myself in the reflections of the glass, in the flame that comes from my torch. Teaching me patience that I never had before. Going on 2 years working with a torch, making this my 6th year in the glass community. My goal is to create a safe haven in this class for those seeking a break from reality while exploring a new passion.

  Join us to get started with creating videos with just your phone! In this class, you will learn how to tell an engaging story, edit with Capcut, and best practices for using audio. You'll be taken through the process of how to edit and export your video (with provided shots) and create your own beautiful shots to get you started on the next video of your own. By the end of the class, you'll have all the basic skills to be on your video production journey!

  Hi, I'm Dakota. I went to school for architecture and currently work at a high end furniture design firm running their 3d printers and doing their 3d modeling and rendering. I've worked in a lot of different fields from the building construction industry to city planning. I'm sort of a jack of all trades when it comes to making both with my hands and digitally. My current hobbies are home renovation, cosplay, and building cnc machines. I'm always short on time but I love to brain storm and either get inspired or help inspire others.   At this meetup, you’ll get an introduction to the most widely used chainmail pattern and learn the first steps to making a bracelet, or continue work on your own chainmail project with the instructor present.

  Whether you’re gearing up to fight on the battlefield or having a night on the town, chainmail has provided a durable medium for adornment and protection for over a millennia. 
  

   Material and tools provided. All you have to do is bring yourself, your curiosity, and a friend!

  
  

  
  

  Drew Whitehurst is four-year Burlington to W-S transplant and lifelong crafter and fidgeter. Drew got into making chainmail and LARP props in 2010 and never looked back.

  Through the years Drew has sold pieces at fairs and markets, taken personal commissions and worked as official prop and set-builder for various LARPS and theater companies. Come learn stuff and make stuff with Drew at MIXXER!

  Come learn the basic techniques and skills you will need to start painting beautiful miniatures! In this class you will learn the building blocks you will need to have to build your skills and style for painting in the 3D medium. You will focus on all the basics of the art form including light and shadow, color theory, brush techniques and control which you will use to practice and build your control. We will be painting a full mini of a 2 inch turtle in your choice of colors. 

  
  

  For the majority of my life I have been heavily interested in crafts, art and hobbies. I have experience in a lot of different styles and mediums within the hobby space. From the time I was a kid I spent a lot of time learning things that interest me, which has given me experience in woodworking, paper-art, fabrication, painting, 3D printing and even comic book creation. Nerd and geek culture has been a big influence on my life and has pushed my interest in hands on and creative hobbies for decades. Not only do I love finding and learning as many hobbies as possible, but I absolutely love to teach. Sharing my knowledge and being able to support and advance peoples skills and talents within their artistic and creative endeavors is something I am very passionate about. Watching students come in with minimal experience and progress to surpass my abilities is something that gives me a lot of pride and happiness. I am looking forward to expanding my knowledge within the hobby space at Mixxer, getting to know the creators and hobbyists, and of course, sharing my knowledge with whoever has an interest in expanding their artistic heights.   Learn how to create a dazzling rainbow effect on wood and create a rainbow tone picture frame! In this class we will review how to create a rainbow finish. This style can be recreated on most hardwoods, but for the purposes of this class we will be working on pre-assembled wooden picture frames. This look uses several techniques: shou sugi ban inspired wood burning, colored stain application, and traditional wood sealing. You’ll be taking home a finished 8” x 6” picture frame that can hold a 4” x 6” photo, as well as the knowledge of how to apply the technique to other objects.

  When using stains, there's always the risk of accidentally getting some on your clothes. Please wear something that you don't mind this happening to. Refrain from wearing loose clothes, and keep long hair tied back.

  Drop into MIXXER between 4 PM and 6 PM with your sewing machine and sewing project questions!

  Wondering what all those dials and buttons do on your home machine? Bring it in and ask Mixxer's resident expert. Learn basic sewing machine technology and make and take home a template of your machine's stitches and settings. You'll also learn to adjust for different stitches and fabrics. Any sewing project questions? Bring them in too and collaborate with fellow sewing geeks and friends!

Having had an established career as an electronics technician and running a business focused on sewing machine repairs, June can skillfully assess your machine and give you guidance in all its stitches and settings.   There are a ton of 3d models that already exist online for free. Sometimes the fastest way to get into complex modeling is to take what is provided and collage it together into something new. We will be going over where to find models, best practices for combing them in blender, and how to make sure they are ready to be 3d printed.
