Delve into the magical world of microcontrollers, tiny computers that drive automation in the world around us. We find them in timers, thermostats, toys, microwaves, electric toothbrushes, automobiles, and the exciting new sensors and actuators that make up the Internet of Things. The Arduino microcontroller and its development environment make it easy for you to put together electronic circuits and program the Arduino itself without having an extensive background in electronics, engineering, or computer programming.

In this maker experience, you will get:

          • An overview of the Arduino and key components
          • An introduction to electronics
          • An introduction to programming the Arduino

The course fee includes an Arduino Super Starter Kit featuring an Arduino UNO board, and myriad components – resistors, capacitors, LEDs, motors, LCD display, joystick, and many sensors (humidity/temperature, photocells, infrared receiver, thermistor, and ultrasonic distance).

We will use your starter kit and the computers in the Mixxer Computer Lab to develop several small projects using some of these sensors. Handouts will include definitions of key terms and concepts, diagrams, code listings, and instructions for installing the Arduino development environment on your own computer. The Starter Kit includes a CD with extensive documentation and additional projects to carry your journey into microcontrollers beyond this introductory workshop.

REGISTRATION CLOSES 4 DAYS BEFORE THIS WORKSHOP TO ALLOW TIME TO ORDER ARDUINO SUPER STARTER KITS. SIGN UP SOON!

*This maker experience is great for makers 14 years old and older.  If you're under the age of 13 and would like to take this experience, attend with your parent/guardian. It makes a great family making experience!

Mixxer requires makers under the age of 16 years old be accompanied by a parent/guardian. If you have any questions, please email workshops@wsmixxer.org.

INSTRUCTOR BIO: Randy has had an eclectic career that includes a degree in Zoology, a Masters in Speech Communication and over 40 years of software development and management. In 2013, chancing upon a Popular Science magazine article describing the Arduino microcontroller and the maker movement, he saw a new opportunity for creativity. He immediately acquired an Arduino and set off to learn more about it and about electronics in general. Many microcontroller projects later, he is ready to share his knowledge and experience with others.

Randy is an experienced speaker and presenter. His current projects involve the Internet of Things, especially low energy Bluetooth (BLE) communication and employing microcontrollers with his other hobby, 3D design and printing.

            • STUDIO: Garment District & Flexspace
            • LEVEL: Beginner, makers of any age*
            • INSTRUCTOR: Lara Crews of Seamstress at the Circ Desk

In this maker experience, you will learn to create your own cozy stuffed animal! Using a pattern (see below) that you will have the option to make a bear, dog, or bunny. You will cut out the fabric, use a sewing machine to sew darts, and the seams, learn how to insert safety eyes, and then learn to hand sew the stuffed animal up after filling with fluff (and love).

Fleece will be provided, but if you want to make yours with fake fur, please purchase 1 yard for a bear or dog and 1 1/4 yard for a bunny. Note that fleece will be easier if you’ve not sewn lots of curves before, but a learning challenge is always acceptable in this sewing space!

Sewing machines and other sewing accessories will also be provided.

*Mixxer requires makers 16 years old be accompanied by an adult. Email workshops@wsmixxer.org with any questions!

Lara Crews is the owner and founder of Steamstress at the Circ Desk, LLC. Having spent just over a decade as a children’s librarian in both public and school libraries, Lara learned that the maker side of libraries was her favorite part! Lara learned to sew after becoming a librarian to make her own costumes for storytime - and ended up making stuffed animals for props, totes for books and iPads, and quilts! Taking her love of stories and sewing, Lara wanted to work with the community to take that spark of an idea and turn it into a reality. When Lara is not sewing, she is fluffing a quilt for her elderly cat to lay on or making her own spin on healthy cooking as a culinary school drop-out turned librarian! You can find Lara on IG: @ pigeonlibrarian.

Mixxer requires makers under 16 years old be accompanied by a parent/guardian.

            • INSTRUCTOR: Sara Reinthaler

Have you always wanted to try your hand at wood carving or whittling? In this maker experience, you will get an introduction to wood carving . Makers will learn to cut out shapes on the electric scroll saw or bandsaw, then use a carving knife to shape and carve the details!

You will learn to make a snowman, heart or other wintery adornment! Take your shape home to be sanded, painted or wood burned.  These wintery items make nice holiday ornaments, magnets or gift tags!

            IMPORTANT SAFETY NOTE:

Be sure to wear and boots or close toed shoes. We'll provide the rest of the safety gear you'll need.

Please bring your own cut resistant gloves if you have them.

Mixxer's cut resistant gloves are sized M & L; if other sizes are needed, please email workshops@wsmixxer.org

Sara moved to NC in 2020 from New Jersey where she founded and ran a Makerspace in a k-8 school for 8 years. She has taught many classes on a variety of craft and STEM topics to both children and educators. She loves to learn new skills and make all the things!

Sara learned to wood carve while living in New Jersey, attending a local woodcarving school. She continues to share her passion for the craft with Mixxer members and the local Triad woodcarving community.
