Delve into the magical world of microcontrollers, tiny computers that drive automation in the world around us. We find them in timers, thermostats, toys, microwaves, electric toothbrushes, automobiles, and the exciting new sensors and actuators that make up the Internet of Things. The Arduino microcontroller and its development environment make it easy for you to put together electronic circuits and program the Arduino itself without having an extensive background in electronics, engineering, or computer programming.

In this maker experience, you will get:

    • An overview of the Arduino and key components
    • An introduction to electronics
    • An introduction to programming the Arduino

The course fee includes an Arduino Super Starter Kit featuring an Arduino UNO board, and myriad components – resistors, capacitors, LEDs, motors, LCD display, joystick, and many sensors (humidity/temperature, photocells, infrared receiver, thermistor, and ultrasonic distance).

We will use your starter kit and the computers in the Mixxer Computer Lab to develop several small projects using some of these sensors. Handouts will include definitions of key terms and concepts, diagrams, code listings, and instructions for installing the Arduino development environment on your own computer. The Starter Kit includes a CD with extensive documentation and additional projects to carry your journey into microcontrollers beyond this introductory workshop.

**SPACE IS LIMITED TO ALLOW FOR MORE ONE-ON-ONE INSTRUCTION.**

**REGISTRATION CLOSES 3 DAYS BEFORE THIS WORKSHOP TO ALLOW TIME TO ORDER ARDUINO SUPER STARTER KITS. SIGN UP SOON!**

INSTRUCTOR BIO: Randy has had an eclectic career that includes a degree in Zoology, a Masters in Speech Communication and over 40 years of software development and management. In 2013, chancing upon a Popular Science magazine article describing the Arduino microcontroller and the maker movement, he saw a new opportunity for creativity. He immediately acquired an Arduino and set off to learn more about it and about electronics in general. Many microcontroller projects later, he is ready to share his knowledge and experience with others.

Randy is an experienced speaker and presenter. His current projects involve the Internet of Things, especially low energy Bluetooth (BLE) communication and employing microcontrollers with his other hobby, 3D design and printing.

This two-part maker experience is designed for those that want to get hands-on bladesmithing with the bonus of taking home their very first, finished knife! Attendees will learn bladesmith safety, how-to use bladesmithing tools, design concepts, initial steel forming, prep heat treating, tempering, handle mounting, and finishing.

This is a TWO part maker experience: You must be able to attend both the Saturday Oct 2nd & Saturday Oct 9th sessions in order to take home the knife you make.

In the first session, makers will start with a bar of carbon steel, forge the blade & handle. These forged blades will be heat treated and tempered.

In the second session, makers will add the edge to the blade and mount wood handles to your knives. Approximate size of the knife you will create is 3 or 4 inches long.

All tools, materials, and safety gear will be provided.

Space is limited so sign up soon!

**IMPORTANT NOTE: Please wear appropriate attire! Shirt of natural fibers, jeans, and shoes that completely cover feet. Leather or work boots work best!  Also, don't forget you're playing with fire, so depending on the time of day and season, a hat, sunscreen and bottle of water could be useful. You will also be hammering steel, so rest up before each session and bring all your muscle!**

Some of the women we surveyed wanted a women's only event where they can be themselves and connect with other women. If that appeals to you, come on over for this introductory woodworking maker meet experience.

On the 3rd and 4th Wednesday of the month, you and friends will learn how to safely use most of the tools in the woodshop including the planer, jointer, table saw, mitre saw, and more!

IMPORTANT: Be sure to wear and boots or close toed shoes. We'll provide the rest of the safety gear you'll need.

In this two-session maker experience, you will learn to create your own screens to print on a T-shirt or tote bag.

Makers will be introduced to the screenprinting process by preparing transparencies, learning to coat & expose screen to make a single color print. Bring your own design or use one from MIXXER's collection to transfer onto a screen and watch your design transform into wearable, show-off-able art!

              **IMPORTANT**

This workshop occurs over two sessions, starting Thursday, Oct 28th (6 pm - 8 pm) and continues Friday, Oct 29th (6 pm - 8 pm).

You logo or artwork should be a single color design on white background in a digital format. Ensure your design fits within the maximum size of the screen of 12-in by 16-in.

White T-shirts will be provided (L and XL sizes available). Participants have the option to bring their own garments or tote bags.

Instructor Bio: Kimberly Varnadoe received her BFA in Painting from the University of South Alabama and her MFA in Printmaking from the University of Memphis. In addition to being Professor of Art at Salem College in Winston-Salem, NC, she also directed the Elberson Fine Arts Center Galleries, curating multiple exhibits for more than 25 years.

Varnadoe has been screen printing for more than 30 years, beginning when she was an undergrad student. She had great fun printing T-shirts with messages for friends using her original designs. She also creates works with experimental photography and a variety of printmaking techniques, often combining the two processes. She enjoys experimentation and feels that art is most alive during the art making -- the final work of art is the record of the art process. She finds sharing ideas and skills with other people uplifting and inspiring!
